There doesn't seem to be much information available to accurately date this marriage, but it is generally believed to have occured about 1613.

Sir William Dunbar was created first Baronet of Hempriggs in 1700 with remainder restricted to heirs-male, but on later reflection, as he had an only daughter Elizabeth but no son, and as he wished her and the children of her second marriage to succeed to his new acquired possessions, he executed an entail of his lairds in her favour and also asked Queen Anne for a new baronetcy in favour of his son-in-law. Elizabeth had married Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstone, grandson of the historian, by whom she had seven children. After his death she married the Hon. James Sutherland, advocate, second son of the second Lord Duffus. As the children of the first marriage were already well provided for, Sir William wished the landless heirs of the second marriage to come into the succession. Accordingly, on Sir William’s death, his son-in-law was created Sir James Sutherland Dunbar of Hempriggs with remained to heirs-general. The first baronetcy passed to Sir William’s brother Robert, and still exists although now known as Northfield. Sir James Dunbar (previously Sutherland) was succeeded by his son and heir Sir William Dunbar (the couple had six children). During the lairdship of Sir William a writer in 1726 says Ackergill Tower was then "a strong tower and yet in repair and betwixt it and the sea is a good new house lately built". Bishop Forbes visited the tower in 1762; He mentions that the vaulted chamber on the ground floor was ‘then used as a kitchen and that Sir William Dunbar had cut out some large windows and was doing up the tower in a very pretty and elegant manner’.

George first sat as a Peer in Parliament in 1542; he was Justiciary of Northern Scotland and a supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots. On the night that James Rizzio was murdered, George was amongst the Earls and supporters that rescued her from Holyrood Palace. He also aided Mary and Darnley in their escape to Dunbar Castle. He was foreman at the trial of James, Earl of Bothwell, for the murder of Darnley in 1567.

Burkes Peerage states that George's father died at the battle of Summerdale in Orkney on 18 May 1529. However they do not mention that George was a minor when he succeeded to the Earldom, nor does there appear to be any other record of George requiring wards and/or guardians implying he was a minor. Due to this one has to assume that George was of age in 1529, meaning he could NOT have been born in 1527, however, he was known to be living on 14 July 1527.

George has to have been born about 1503, as he resigned the Earldom to his son and heir, John, in 1545. John had to be of adult age in 1545 or George would not have resigned the Earldom in his favour. This means John had to have been born at least 21 years prior or about 1524. If we presume that George was about 21 when he had his son John, that gives a birth year of approximately 1503.

According to the Scots Peerage he resigned the Earldom into the hands of Queen Mary, who then granted the charter thereof to William's son, John, on 2 October 1545. (p. 338)

Given grant of a yearly pension of £90, 19s. 4 3/4d., 1 Apr 1575. ⁸⁷ Deed was dated 1 April and 1, 20 and 31 May 1575 and granted by Robert, Bishop of Caithness in return for '....the great help given by the Earl to the bishop in maintaining him in his bishopric..." (p. 339) This pension was granted not onlly to George, but to his son after his decease and to an heir of his son.

Received confirmation by the Crown of the yearly pension awarded in 1575, 1 Jun 1578. ⁸⁷
