No source is consistent with regard to John's wife name. She is regularly called by both Ann and Margaret. - See note by Thomas Sinclair regarding this issue. He is very clear that Margaret was not the sister that married John, rather Anne was.

NB: Nick Cram-Sinclair gives his date of birth as about 1628, however, it is difficult to see how he could have been made a baronet when he was 4 years of age, nor how he could have been styled in charters dated 1635 and 1636 as Sir James Sinclair of Canisbay at 7 and 8 years of age.

Also, his mother died in 1603 making a birth year of 1628 more than a little ludicrous.

Most people place this marriage as occurring 18 March 1642, however no sources are readily apparent. There is a marriage between William Sinclair and Elizabeth Sinclair recorded in Canisbay on 10 March 1657, for which there seems to be no good reason to exclude as the marriage of this couple.

Appears to have left the country around 1658 as John Murray, a writer in Edinborough, wrote to John's brother-in-law, Walter Bruce of Ham, warning him that if John should come back into the country there was an order for Captain Pantimane to arrest him.

Sir William Dunbar was created first Baronet of Hempriggs in 1700 with remainder restricted to heirs-male, but on later reflection, as he had an only daughter Elizabeth but no son, and as he wished her and the children of her second marriage to succeed to his new acquired possessions, he executed an entail of his lairds in her favour and also asked Queen Anne for a new baronetcy in favour of his son-in-law. Elizabeth had married Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstone, grandson of the historian, by whom she had seven children. After his death she married the Hon. James Sutherland, advocate, second son of the second Lord Duffus. As the children of the first marriage were already well provided for, Sir William wished the landless heirs of the second marriage to come into the succession. Accordingly, on Sir William’s death, his son-in-law was created Sir James Sutherland Dunbar of Hempriggs with remained to heirs-general. The first baronetcy passed to Sir William’s brother Robert, and still exists although now known as Northfield. Sir James Dunbar (previously Sutherland) was succeeded by his son and heir Sir William Dunbar (the couple had six children). During the lairdship of Sir William a writer in 1726 says Ackergill Tower was then "a strong tower and yet in repair and betwixt it and the sea is a good new house lately built". Bishop Forbes visited the tower in 1762; He mentions that the vaulted chamber on the ground floor was ‘then used as a kitchen and that Sir William Dunbar had cut out some large windows and was doing up the tower in a very pretty and elegant manner’.

However, given that the line of the Lords Sinclair has been fairly well documented, it seems most likely that the marriage given in reference to Margaret, daughter of James, Master of Sinclair, is the correct marriage.
