Was apparently badly harrassed by his cousin, the Earl of Caithness and was forced to retire to Moray.

Paid a "casualty of marriage" in this year, so presumably this is when he married.

Beatrix Gordon obtained the rents of Fisherne from the Lords of Council till her divorce with William Sinclair was settled. There is a sederunt at Holyrood dated 27 May 1574 dealing with this divorce and settlement.

It is unclear who her father was, the two possibilities being Alexander, Master of Sutherland; or his son, Earl John.

George first sat as a Peer in Parliament in 1542; he was Justiciary of Northern Scotland and a supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots. On the night that James Rizzio was murdered, George was amongst the Earls and supporters that rescued her from Holyrood Palace. He also aided Mary and Darnley in their escape to Dunbar Castle. He was foreman at the trial of James, Earl of Bothwell, for the murder of Darnley in 1567.

Burkes Peerage states that George's father died at the battle of Summerdale in Orkney on 18 May 1529. However they do not mention that George was a minor when he succeeded to the Earldom, nor does there appear to be any other record of George requiring wards and/or guardians implying he was a minor. Due to this one has to assume that George was of age in 1529, meaning he could NOT have been born in 1527, however, he was known to be living on 14 July 1527.

George has to have been born about 1503, as he resigned the Earldom to his son and heir, John, in 1545. John had to be of adult age in 1545 or George would not have resigned the Earldom in his favour. This means John had to have been born at least 21 years prior or about 1524. If we presume that George was about 21 when he had his son John, that gives a birth year of approximately 1503.

According to the Scots Peerage he resigned the Earldom into the hands of Queen Mary, who then granted the charter thereof to William's son, John, on 2 October 1545. (p. 338)

Burkes Peerage states that George had sons John, William, George and David and four daughters.

Commission of Justiciary extended, granting power to appoint deputies, 14 May 1566. ⁸⁷

Given grant of a yearly pension of £90, 19s. 4 3/4d., 1 Apr 1575. ⁸⁷ Deed was dated 1 April and 1, 20 and 31 May 1575 and granted by Robert, Bishop of Caithness in return for '....the great help given by the Earl to the bishop in maintaining him in his bishopric..." (p. 339) This pension was granted not onlly to George, but to his son after his decease and to an heir of his son.

Received confirmation by the Crown of the yearly pension awarded in 1575, 1 Jun 1578. ⁸⁷

George married Lady Elizabeth GRAHAM,¹ ^,2 ^,25 ^,26 ^,60 ^,61 ^,84 daughter of Sir William GRAHAM 2nd Earl Of Montrose ¹ ^,2 ^,4 ^,60 ^,61 and Lady Janet KEITH,¹ ^,2 ^,60 ^,61 in Scotland. Elizabeth was born in 1506 in Old Montrose, Angus, Scotland and died on 4 Apr 1576 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, at age 70.

She had an estate probated Edinburgh Commissary Court on 4 Apr 1576. Surname spelt GRAHAME. Recorded as "Dame, sometime spouse to George, Earl of Caithness".
