Named as Spouse of Oliver Sinclair in 1523, although St Clair's assumes he must have been dead as his heir executed the documents. Nonetheless, Oliver and his wife Elizabeth Borthwick are specifically named, and so must have been alive. Presumably this means he had resigned in favour of his son by this date.

Charter dated 7 December 1476, obtained from King James III reads 'William Sinclare, son of William, Earl of Caithness and Lord St. Clair, begotten betwixt him and Marjory, Countess of Caithness, his spouse,'. This charter granted him the whole lands of the earldom of Caithness to be held by him and his heirs whomsoever. (Scots Peerage, p. 337)

Attempted to set aside his father's settlement and succeeded in effecting an arrangment whereby Sir Oliver Sinclair retained Rosslyn and made over to him the lands in Fife.

William was known as "The Waster" and was set aside from the succession to the Earldom by his father. On March 29, 1482 the Sheriff of Edinburgh was commanded to summon a jury to determine the 'sanity' of William, and on 17 April 1482 he was found to be 'incompos mentis et fatuus' and had been so for the preceeding sixteen years. Alexander was born about 1454 and died in 1484 in France, aged about 30. The cause of his death was Accidentally killed in a tournament.

Marriage was annulled on the grounds on consanguinity (too closely related). This means they had to be first cousins, however, according to the records (to date), they were 2nd cousins, and this was not within the forbidden degrees (Great Grandfather in common or first cousins). There MUST be another connection.

Believed to be a natural son, with the mother unknown. It is very possible that he was, in fact, a lawful son, but Margaret Hepburn, his cousin, had designs on his estate and claimed him "borne bastard" after his death, thereby managing to overturn his will and claim the estates. Given that there was no hint of illegitimacy during his lifetime, and that he was considered by most to be the third 'lawful' son, one has to view this claim as highly suspect.

3 Dec 1498 - Charter at Edinburgh granted the lands of Sweinbrough in Zetland. Charter was given by six lawful sons and seven lawful daughters named 'to their dearest brother, Sir David Sinclair, Knight and fowd of Zetland, for the fraternal love they bore to him, and for good deeds done by him to them, the lands of Sweinbrough, in the lordship of Zetland, and all and sundry their other lands lying in the lordship of Zetland, belonging to them by reason of the death of their father.'
