My Dearest Gwen,
I received your very nice letter a few days ago, but as I was on the move at the time, I couldn't answer it till today (Sunday), They say the better the day the better the deed, I would have like you to have seen me one night. I was sleeping under a rock and it was raining like the Devil. I had to sleep with my boots and leggings on, so as to keep dry, but you take those things as they come in the Army. I suppose you have heard by now, that I am somewhere in New Guinea. There is one thing about it as there are only Natives up here, I can't get into any mischief. Don't you agree Gwen.
I have been doing some washing today, and boiling things up in a Kerosine tin. So I am writing this letter while they are boiling, so as not to waste time.
Look what a good Husband I'll make after the War, now I can cook, wash and even darn socks. There is one thing you are independant of Women. What do you say Gwen.
I m sorry to hear Peg is on the war path, tell her to save it up till I come back.
She might be grown up by then.
I would just like to know what you mean by saying Harry and I are shy. I think you are having a shot at us.
In reply to you asking if I have been off the drink, well I haven't had a Pay Book since I have been back, in fact I am still waiting for it, and that si three months ago. But all the same it is doing me good being off it, as I am feeling fit, and really as black as the Natives up here.
How is Uncle Alf getting on, I was sorry to hear he was out fo the Army. I suppose he has another job by now. If you do happen to shift, don't forget to put your address on the letter. As I notice you have a habit of leaving it off.
Gwen Dear I am not sending that photo back to you unless you (illegible) the negative, as I would like one, (illegible) that is the only way I can get one. So I hope you won't be cross about it.
I was pleased to hear........

My Dearest Gwen,
I suppose by now, that you think that I forgotten you, but such is not the case.
I have been moving around a lot, also that I have been on leave to Brisbane, and I didn't receive your very nice letter, until I returned to (illegible), so Dear I hope you will forgive me, for not writing before this, and answer this letter as soon as possible, because it seems years since I last heard from you. I had a very quite time, while on leave, I went for a few (illegible), also had a few drinks, but not too many, so you see how good I am getting.
How is the Country life going Gwen? I quite agree with you, when you say, that you have a better time in the Country, than in the City.
Do you go to any Dances up there, or are you still to shy, you ought to go, because you would make a nice partner.
I don't get you in your letter Gwen, when you say I pass to many remarks, will you please write and explain in what way, because I can't see it.
Well Gwen Dear, as I want to get this short letter to catch the mail, I will close and write again later. Remember me to every one at home, also to your Little Reggie
I remain
Yours Always
George.

OBITUARY
Douglas Charles Patton

Douglas Charles Patton was a man of strong willpower and possessed the courage to face and fight all obstacles.
He was born in Heathcote in 1908, the eldest son of Douglas and Ina Patton and brother to Grace, Caroline, Joseph, Ern, Esma and Les.
For some time the Patton family lived in Wallan East, after World War 1 they moved to Longwood. They all attended St. Andrews Church, and for several years Doug was the bell ringer.
He often spoke of how the bell had to be rung 50 times half an hour before the service, then another 25 times when the service was due to commence. Doug was confirmed at St. Paul's Cathederal.
In the mid 20's the Patton family returned to Wallan East, then in '29 they moved to Merlyston. It was there young Doug Patton met Miss Mary (Molly) Pinches. After a three year courtship, they were married at StPaul's Ascot Vale.
During World War 2 Doug was a driver for a munitions factory. In 1942 he and Molly moved to Longwood and lived there for the past 44 years.........................................
Doug Patton was a man who always worked hard in his chosen industry of timber, and later super spreading.
In 1945 the family was devastated when fire destroyed their home in Hurley Street. The people of Longwood rallied round them and a new house was built on the same site. Doug's pride in this community spirit stayed with him always, and it was a major factor in his decision not to leave Longwood when fire struck again in 1980.
Doug was involved in the re-forming of Longwood Football Club after the last war, and was always a staunch supporter. He played in premiership teams in that era, and in the early 50's had the unique experience of playing in the same team with his two brothers and his three sons.
The Patton family has always been a closely knit one and it extended to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. This was shown at the large family gathering on the 18th April 1982 when Doug and Molly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Doug retired in 1972 and developed an interest in gardening. The
results of his and Molly's efforts are shown in what the family
affectionately dubbed "Longwood's Botanical Gardens".
About Easter this year he was told of his steady deterioration of
health. His determination not to give in was an inspiration to his
whole family. Doug Patton finally lost this battle on 28th August and passed away at the Seymour Hospital.
The funeral service was held at St. Andrew's where he had merrily rung the bell so long ago. The church was filled to capacity, and many who were unable to enter heard the service on the outside speaker. Some had travelled from South Australia, Queensland and West Australia to pay their last respects.
Coffin bearers were Doug, Mark and Ronald Patton, Richard and John Carracher and Mick Wilson.
The many beautiful floral tributes, and the long cortege to the
Longwood cemetery showed the high esteem people had for Douglas Charles Patton.
.

Douglas was buried at the Doug & Molly's Grave Old Longwood Cemetery, Longwood, Victoria, Australia on 10 Sep 1986.

Douglas married Mary Winifred "Molly" PINCHES,2 daughter of Tom PINCHES and Polly UNKNOWN, on 18 Apr 1932 in St. Paul's, Ascot Vale, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Mary was born on 12 Sep 1911 in Sheffield, England, died on 10 Oct 2007 in Seymour, Victoria, Australia, at age 96, and was buried in Old Longwood Cemetery, Longwood, Victoria, Australia. {FGID: 182966784}

Thumbs Up For Longwood: 11 Dec 1996, Longwood, Victoria, Australia

An interview conducted by Gary Patton with his Grandfather Ernie on the 11th December 1996.

Ernie attended the Wallan School as a child.

He recounted to his grandson Gary, (December 11th 1996) of how he used to get threepence for school and how one penny of this was meant for the horse & cab ride into Wallan to school, the remainder being for lunch. However he, with his brothers and sisters used to walk into Wallan so that they would have an additional penny to spend. His favorite lunch was Butternut Snap biscuits. He also told of how he used to take his shoes off trying to prevent having to walk to school.

At the time when his parents moved to Merlynston he was still of school age, and continued his education at Merlynston until the age of 14 when he left to work with his father.

Ernie married Mavis Lennox at Glenline Road, Brunswick, after the ceremony they travelled by tram into Melbourne where they stayed at the Federal Hotel in Collins Street for their Honeymoon.

During they earlier years of their marriage they lived for a time at 41 Merlin Street, Merlynston, Melbourne.

Well known as a family of Carriers, it was during WWII that Ernie worked with his brother Doug driving transport for a munitions factory.

When Ernie and Mavis first moved to Longwood they lived with the family of Jack Houston in the old hotel (turned residence) at the corner of Hill & Hurley Streets (this house is still owned by the Houston family).

They then moved to a house in Hill Street at the entrance to Carrachers Timber Mill (south end entrance). This home was owned by the sister of Mr Steve Moore (a long time resident of the area).

In 1948 they were living in a house at the Northern end of Maxfield Street. This is currently the house of Robert ("Red") Breen.

It was at about this time that Ernie was approached by his father, about purchasing a converted dual residence, (this was formerly the old Creamery building, later Billiard Rooms and even later Post Office before the Post Office moved to Hurley Street) at the corner of Withers & Maxfield Streets.
The vendors were asking for £1000 however they were able to purchase it for £800 . Ernie and his father were able to arrange finance for the property through a Mr Jack Clinnick for the princely sum of £1 a week. Ernie was to sell the house many years later for $14000.

Douglas transported a bungalow from Melbourne to be used as a bathroom, and built a bungalow at the rear, for the residence in Maxfield Street. The houses have since been renovated by a new owner with some structural changes including the removal of the old Post Office annexe at the front of the building.

During the early years at Longwood, Ernie used to cut timber out of an area near Ruffy called 'Good Morning Billy'. On one occasion Ernie, Frank Carracher and Jimmy Grant were carting 7 feet lengths of timber to Howlitt's at Coburg. Howlitt's was situated next door to 172 O'Hayes Road in Coburg where Ernie used to live. It was on this trip, and with about a 20 Ton of timber remaining to be cut into shorter lengths, that a billet was placed on the 'rocker' saw bench. Attempting to stop the billet from slamming into the saw blade, Ernie grabbed at the bench. In his rush to steady the bench, he had hold of the saw guard, just as the saw protruded into this area slicing his left thumb down it's length. From here he was taken straight into the Melbourne Hospital where he was immediately operated on by a surgeon by the name of 'Weary" Dunlop. 'Weary' grafted skin from Ernie's left upper thigh over the wound down the inside of his thumb. Following the initial surgery 'Weary" indicated to Ernie that he wanted to attach his thumb to his ribs, under the skin, for about 6 weeks to aid in the healing process. Not too keen on this idea, Ernie asked 'Weary" whether he would suffer from stifihess of the thumb and not retain full use, to which 'Weary" replied that was likely to occur.
Hearing this Ernie discharged himself from the Melbourne hospital and travelled back to Euroa where he approached the local G.P., Dr Waterhouse to surgically remove the thumb, knowing that it would be of little use due to it's lack of dexterity. Dr Waterhouse wouldn't touch the thumb, knowing that 'Weary' was the surgeon on the case, and told Ernie to get permission from Melbourne before he would even touch it.
Ernie obtained the required permission, following which Dr Waterhouse removed the affected thumb.
To aid in the toughening of the stub, Ernie used to pour pepper onto the area.

Ernie had a Transport Business at Longwood for many years (E.A.Patton & Sons). He used to cart livestock & fruit to Melbourne for the local farmers.
He also used to cut and cart timber both locally including Bottons Mill in Euroa (at the back of where the swimming pool now stands), to Melbourne and surrounding areas including Lilydale.
He used to own a WWII surplus vehicle which was referred to by members of the family as the 'Bren Gun'. It is suspected that this vehicle was in fact an amoured personnel carrier which was used to assist in 'pulling timber out' and the kids used to learn to drive in this vehicle when they were working out of Ruffy and Terip Terip.

He also used to transport superphosphate fertilizer from rail trucks in the Longwood Rail Siding. This was in bulk granular form and had to be transferred to his "super spreader" truck via a scoop and elevator, he would then transport it to the surrounding farmers paddocks where the truck would "fan" it onto the pastures.

Ernie eventually owned several blocks of land across the road from his home in Maxfield Street. It was here that he stored and cut his collected timber with a benchsaw.

Ernie is known by his grandchildren and great granchildren as Granddad. And many recall accompanying him on his numerous trips to Melbourne and his methods of spreading 'super' on the sharp slopes of the hills surrounding Longwood.

His descendants are scattered throughout Victoria, New South Wales and the USA.

You soon will be joined by Mum to share your times ahead together after so many years apart. Love - Mum and your loving children, Clive, Stephen, Denise and David.

Dad, thank you for all the wonderful memories. The holidays we spent together with you and Mum up on the border playing the pokies, a few drinks, the best RSL for cheap dinners.
We had such great fun.
Your family was everything to you. If they were happy, you were happy. You were so very proud of them all.
Thank yo for all the love, care and dedication you gave Mum, especially over the last few years.
We take comfort knowing you will both be together again soon. Make sure you have a wine waiting for her.
