NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Dandenong Journal, 27 Jan 1954.
"THE "FIFTY AND OVER"
session from 3UZ last week proved very interesting to the friends of 'Alice McDonald, of Langwarrin, our local composer, and of Miss Marion Patton, of Wallan, lyric-writer. Miss Pat ton is a descendant of Sir Walter Scott. She produced an original letter of Lord Nelson's, the last he wrote before his death, to her great grand-father, who was Lord Nelson's secretary. Miss Patton recited several of her own lyrics. One of her sohg lyrics, entitled "I'll Come To You," has been set to music by Alice McDonald, and was sung by Mr. Geoff Brook, accompanied by Mr. Davidson's 3UZ orchestra.

This beautiful ballad has been recorded and is to be published. Mrs. McDonald, who is a member of the Frankston Music Club, is now arranging another of Miss Patton's lyrics, a negro spiritual, which will soon be heard over the air.?

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Weekly Times, 3 Feb 1954, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Days of her youth inspire country lyric writer

Fifteen years ago 71 -year-old Miss Marian E. Patton, of Wallan (V.), developed a talent for writing lyrics. Since then she has composed more than 100 hymns and spirituals as well as romantic, classical and art songs and many of them have been arranged and set to music.
It was during a period when she was nursing and looking after her late mother that Miss Patton first started "scribbling" verses. Not so long ago, two of her songs won the monthly competition of the Melbourne Bread and Cheese Club. They are "Dear Eyes of Grey," arranged by Mrs D'Hilda Featherston, of Melbourne, and "I'll Come To You," which was set to music by Mrs Alice MacDonald, a former resident of Langwarrin (V), who now lives In Ballarat (V).
"Beside the Singing Waters," another of Miss Patton's lyrics, recently attracted the attention of popular Melbourne vocalist Geoff Brooke, who had it set to music and recorded it.
Some of Miss Patton's work has been published. One song belonging to this category is "Back to Nagambie." Written for the Back to Nagambie (V) celebrations three years ago.
For orchestra
A little humorous number entitled "Girls" has been orchestrated by Melbourne band leader Tom Davidson. Although she affirms that her knowledge of music is limited, Miss Patton has in one or two instances written both the music and the lyrics.
"Maralita," a little number in Samba dance time and "What Makes the World Go Round," suitable for community singing, are two of these efforts.
Except for 30 years when she was a cutter and designer for a Melbourne clothing manufacturer.
Wallan-born Miss Patton has lived the greater part of her life at the foot of Pretty Sally hill. She looks back 50 years to the days of the Comet Mills when her father laid some of the tramline up from Wandong to the timber mills.
"We used to have wonderful picnics, concerts and dances out at the mills," Miss Patton recalled," and very often artists came up from Melbourne. Then there were the surprise parties the young people used to hold. A bonfire would be lit along the road and we would all meet there and sing songs before going off to the party ".
Nostalgic poem
Many of Miss Patton's lyrics and poems are based on scenes and happenings of her childhood days and her eyes sparkle as she relives these memories again
Her nostalgic regard for the past is particularly expressed in one verse of her poem, "The Old Home" - an elegiac tribute to her mother, her brothers and her home.
It is in this old home that Miss Patton now lives alone, drawing on her memories for inspiration for her writings. She still cuts, designs and makes her own clothes and those of some of her friends, and she spends a number of hours each week tending the flowers In the garden.
One of Miss Patton's most prized possessions is a framed testimonial letter written by Lord Nelson to her great- great grand father, Captain John Scott. Captain Scott was both private secretary and chaplain to Lord Nelson. The letter was written on board the Victory and
dated August 17, 1805, just a short time before the flagship set sail to do battle with the French Navy.
"It is said," Miss Patton tells you, "that Nelson actually fell in Scott's blood. During the Battle of Trafalgar when my great - great - grandfather was shot, Nelson asked 'Is that poor Scott?' A short time later Nelson fell at the same spot."
Tracing back her family history is, for Miss Patton an interesting pastime.
Famous writer, Sir Walter Scott, is on her family tree, "and that's probably where I inherited my flair. 'she says with a twinkle in her eyes.

Television / Radio Appearance: ABC 3AR Radio Elizabeth Street, 26 Dec 1956, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The ABC 3AR Radio program featuring Marian went to air at 8.15pm on the 26 December (Boxing Day) 1956. Her appearance was advertised in The Argus on Saturday 22 December 1956.

Marian also, apart from her poetry penned at least one song "Beside The Singing Waters" which was performed by the Frank Thorne's ABC Variety Orchestra.

The Argus, Saturday 22 December 1956

A most prolific and in defatigable song' writer from Wallan East will be one of the local composers featured in an A.B.C. programme on Wednesday next. :
She is Miss MARION PATTON, an alert and active poet in her
seventies, who has written dozens of songs with a genuine Australian flavor.
Unfortunately, as with most Australian writers, there has been
little or no encouragement for her work, but Miss Patton will be
thrilled to hear FRANK THORNE'S A.B.C. variety orchestra feature her "Beside the Singing Waters" in "These Are Our Songs" from 3AR at 8.15 on Wednesday night.
Marion Patton has undoubted talent, an amazing memory of
the district's identities and activities since her childhood and a
genuine Australian touch so like many others here, and it seems a shame she has not had better opportunities.
We gel bashed unceasingly about Tennessee, Texas, and places like Kalamazoo, but we don't get
much plugging done for our own country. It's a funny set-up.
Funny, that is, for everyone except our struggling composers.
.

Music Recording: Geoff Brooke recorded at least one of Marian's songs, 1955.

Marian's obituary was published on 22 Aug 1962. History Never Dies, Wallan, Victoria, Australia

Marian was known by her family as May.

Unmarried, she worked for a Melbourne clothing manufacturer as a cutter and designer for thirty years, returning home to nurse her ailing mother. This may have been around the time that Caroline fell and broke her hip.

During this period May found that she could compose a wide range of lyrics, from hymns to romantic songs. She won monthly competitions of the Melbourne Bread and Cheese Club and several of her songs, for which she also wrote the music, were published.

In a review of her talents in the Weekly Times of 3 February, 1954, a reporter epitomised her inspiration:

"Many of Miss Pattons' lyrics and poems are based on scenes and happenings of her childhood days, and her eyes sparkle as she relives the memories again. Her nostalgic regard for the past is particularly expressed in one verse of her poem 'The Old Home', an elegaic tribute
to her mother, her brothers, and her home..... "

This poem has also been published in the historical account of the Wallan area, 'Pretty Sally's Hill' by J.W.Payne 1981 and it was this poem that Marian incorporated into a Christmas card which she sent to family members in the Christmas of 1953. This card also included a photo on the front, of the home of Charles Douglas & Caroline Mary Alice "Shaldon Cottage" Wallan East with the inscription "In Memory of Wallan" It is with thanks that we acknowledge Grace Gowler (nee Patton) who allowed us to copy her Christmas card and include it in this journal.

THE OLD HOME, by M. E. Patton

The house 'neath the hill, is so silent and still,
Peopled only by echoes today,
Of the shouts of the boys, and the innocent joys
Of the younger children at play.

The oak Mother grew, nearly hides it from view,
Its limbs too sturdy to train;
The trees we daren't fell, Mother loved them so well,
Are dying, one by one, in the lane.

The silence profound, the garden around,
It too has gone to decay,
Though the daffodils fair, that I planted with care,
By the side of the path, bloom today.

There's the old cricket pitch;
the pride with which No grass was allowed to grow,
The way they would play, on a blazing day,
And with drinks would run to and fro.

So silent the house; you could hear a mouse,
If it just crept across the floor,
But I think of the noise, the night two of the boys,
In a fright, crashed down the door.

"The men are home, there's a lot to be done,"
So tonight I must hurry the tea,
There's a dance at the Hall, and they're sure to call,
"Aren't you ready yet ?" to me.

They still can chaff, with a hearty laugh,
Of the things they used to share,
Of the milk one drank, when a cat had sank,
In a bucket left standing there.

If they came home late, a plate to take,
Some "Football supper" to find,
Some coffee to make, or scones and cake,
That Mother had left behind.

Oh! house 'neath the hill, so lonely and still,
Could I just for a space return,
To those dear old days, and those same old ways,
Though Life's lesson I had to learn.

As I walk up the lane, I hear once again,
The call for a turn at the wheel,
While the axe is ground, for the Dad is bound
To feel the edge of its steel.

The vice and the wrench, and the old work bench,
In fancy I still see there,
While the whip's sharp crack, "Come-eea Prince; Wo back Jack," Steal
out on the quiet air.

The forge that creaked, and the anvil peaked,
Were set at the top of the lane,
Where the wheels Dad made, were proudly displayed,
Could we know he'd ne'er use them again.

Now it all is blurred; ah! surely I heard
A sound from over the hill,
Of the creak of a dray, and horse's soft neigh,
In the team coming home from the Mill.

But it all is o'er, they will run no more,
From the house to the garden gate,
Their eyes to strain, "Did Mother come in that train ?"
Or for Dad from work home late,

Time's wheels go round though we hear no sound,
And they carry us all away,
From the love we knew, and the hearts so true,
That cared for us till that day.

Though we offer a prayer, for their love and their care,
Enough we could never say,
For the home 'neath the hill, so lonely and still,
And its memories so grave and gay.

Upper Plenty School: 1880-1919, in Upper Plenty, Victoria, Australia. In 1919 the old schoolhouse was destroyed by fire.

The following is an article from the Kilmore Free Press, dated 20 February 1919.

1919 Bushfires
There were four or five distinct lines of fire travelling down [the Plenty Valley] at the one time, and the residences of Messrs MKenzie and Dickens, and the latter's valuable orchard, was totally destroyed. Mr Robertson lost everything except his house; a big waterwheel, implement shed and implements and drays were all destroyed. The Upper Plenty School and the residence adjoining, which was owned by Miss Smith, the former teacher of the school, were all burnt to the ground, with all their contents. There was not even time to save the records of the school, or the books of the war savings gr{..} Miss Smith will be a heavy loser as an eighty-pound piano was amongst the furniture destroyed.
The residences of Messrs McDougall, Potter, Fleming, McMahon, Speirs, Duckworth, Pratt, Mahady Bros, Prenzel, Turner, Holt and Gardiner, were all saved after almost superhuman efforts. Every residence was attacked by the flames at approximately the same time, consequently each hous had to be defended by only one or two firefighters, and nearly all narrowly escaped destruction.
The Upper Plenty Hall also had a narrow escape - the fire burning righ up ti its four walls. The hall had to take it's chance, as owing to the serious aspect at the adjacent dwellings no one could be spared to defend the hall against the seething inferno of flames.

Ina with her two youngest children, Ina Grace "Grace" (2 years) & Caroline Francis "Carrie" (6 months) were lucky to escape with their lives on the night of the 12th of June, 1913 when a lamp exploded. It is assumed that young, 5 year old, Douglas Charles may have been away from the house with his father at the time.

This was actually the eve of Grace's 2nd birthday.

The following article is from The Age, 13 Jun 1913

WALLAN. A new four-roomed weatherboard dwelling,, owned by Mr. Christopher Mahady at Upper Plenty, and occupied by Mr. D. Patton, was burnt to the ground last night, and the whole of the contents consumed. Mr. Patton was absent from home, and Mrs.Patton and two children just had time to escape from the, building in their night attire. It is not yet known whether the house was insured, but there was no insurance on Mr. Patton's furniture, and they lost everything, even to their clothes. The cause of the fire Is said to be the explosion of a lamp.

1914: Douglas resided at Wallan, Victoria, Australia. 5

1918: Douglas resided at Broadford, Victoria, Australia. Douglas was registered on the electoral rolls as living in Broadford in 1918. It is unknown why they were in Broadford, perhaps work related but this is consistent with what Ernie told his Grandson, Gary Patton about being born in Broadford. His birth was registered in Essendon.

The Wallan Men's Club held a debate on Thursday last on " Is the Power of the Press detrimental to the best interests of the public ?" Mr Doug. Patton led the negative team, and Mr W. J.
Munro the affirmative. The negative side won by 79 points to 76. The next debate is to be " Should State Government be abolished ?" New members are joining the Club every week, and in training men to speak in public, the club is rendering a valuable service to the community.
The club executive is making an appeal for donations to provide, books for the new lending library. It is hoped to have the library opened for use within a few weeks.

Wallan.
From a Correspondent.

Mr Douglas Patton's sawmill in the railway siding at Wallan was destroyed by fire on 10th inst.
Mr Patton and three employees were at work at the mill, when apparently a spark from the engine set fire to the stack of wood nearby, and in a few minutes the whole mill was in flames. Mr
Patton was assisted by railway employees and others in his effotrs to save the mill, but owing to the water shortage very
little could be done. About 70 tons of unsawn firewood were destroyed in addition to the mill, consequently Mr Patton will lose heavily through the fire.

Douglas later went on to operate a wood yard in Merlynston in Melbourne. As to whether this fire was the catalyst for that move is yet to be determined.

Dar built a baby wardrobe, 27 Jun 1962, Longwood, Victoria, Australia.

Douglas "Dar" built a baby wardrobe on the birth of his Great-Grandson Gary Patton.
Though originally a cream color with stickers of a Duck and a Goose on either door, it was later painted "Railway Blue" and then "Railway Green".
In his early 40's Gary refurbished it into a drinks / display cabinet, inserting glass into the door and glass shelves.
The original cabinet still remains, particularly the decorative sides which Douglas reclaimed from an old mantel piece.
A treasured item for Gary until this day. On the top of the cabinet are photos of Gary as a baby.

Twelve Months That Turned Into Half A Century: 11 Dec 1996, Longwood, Victoria, Australia

An interview conducted by Gary Patton with his Grandfather Ernie Patton on the 11th December 1996.

Douglas was born in a house just out from Wallan near the turn-off to Wandong & Whittlesea.

When he was young he was playing at a creek near his home, whilst attempting to jump the Merri Creek he landed awkwardly breaking his right hip.

He was to undergo numerous operations in an attempt to rectify the damage which manifested itself in him having one leg shorter than the other.

During the years following his accident his brother Arthur would loyally carry him to school, this was no insignificant feat as the boys used to go to the Upper Plenty School. Arthur would have to cart his brother all the way down the Gap Road to get to school, and home again.

Douglas was subsequently fitted with an elevated shoe to compensate for the difference in his leg length.

As a young man, Douglas worked with his father and brothers in the sawmill at the Wallan railyards (later known as Wallan East when the main township moved towards the old Hume Highway), (as mentioned in information relating to his father)

Douglas, with his wife Ina, and family moved to Merlyston, a suburb of Melbourne, where he and his two sons Douglas (Doug) and Ernest (Ernie) opened and operated a wood yard at 41 Boundary Road, Merlynston. Their home was situated on the same block of land. It was to here that Doug (Jnr) would cart timber in the back of an old Dodge car from Wallan to Merlynston, where it would be cut at the wood yard and sold as firewood in and around Melbourne. They then moved to 172 O'Hea's Road in Coburg, it was at this home that they were living when Douglas' wife, Ina, died.

Douglas, his daughter Carrie (Caroline) and elder son Doug Jnr, went to live at Longwood for a very brief period of time for the purpose of obtaining work cutting timber. Following this they then returned to their home in Melbourne.

Whilst cutting timber in a large shed at 1044 Sydney Road, Coburg, Douglas was involved in an accident.
As he was pushing the timber through the saw he had all four fingers on his right hand ripped off by the blades.
Following surgical intervention they were able to successfully reattach his index finger by wiring it to the joint. It was at this time that his doctor 'jokingly' remarked that if he wanted to remove the index finger to 'come back and see him as he could do a cleaner job of it'. This was obviously in reference to the condition of Douglas' other amputated fingers.
To protect the stubs of the fingers of his right hand Douglas wore a leather shield.
Almost 6 weeks following the original accident Douglas was to again suffer an injury at the hands of a saw blade, and in deference to his doctors advice, he cut off his right index finger.

It was in 1942 that Douglas again returned to Longwood, this time with Carrie and Ernie and Mavis with their young family (Shirley & lan). This was again, supposedly, intended as a short term 12 month stay.

Douglas and Ernie were to be employed by a Mr Dudley, only for a period of 12 months.
The purpose of this arrangement was for Douglas, Ernie and Doug (he arrived approximately 6 months after the rest of the family with his wife Molly and young daughter Mary), to 'cut-out' a stack of timber for Mr Dudley.

Douglas, Carrie, Ernie and his family first moved in with the family of Jack Houston in the old hotel (turned residence) at the corner of Hill & Hurley Streets (this house is still owned by the Houston family)
The only other house that Douglas and Carrie lived in was when, as the only remaining Patton family members still living in the Houston household, they jointly purchased with Ernie the house(s) on the corner of Maxfield and Withers Streets.

Douglas became known by his grandchildren and great granchildren as Dar. It was by this name that Dar is fondly remembered in his role as patriarch of the Patton family and his skill and handiwork at carpentry in which he produced a number of items of furniture for his family.
Calling him Dar also created a link to our Scottish roots that many children in the family were unaware of at the time.

A cabinet which he created following the birth of his great grandson Gary, as a baby wardrobe, is still a proud possession for Gary to this day.

As it turned out, Douglas lived in Longwood until his death, and in 1996 Ernie was still joking about the original 12 months that turned into more than half a century.

Douglas married Ina Moorabbee COCKS,3,5,6,7 daughter of Joseph Shepperson COCKS 13,20 and Annie Grace "Grace" BRUFFELL,2,3,13 on 8 Feb 1908 in The Manse, Ascot Vale, Melbourne, Victoria.6 Ina was born in 1888 in Heathcote, Victoria, Australia,3 died on 14 Nov 1938 in West Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia,3 at age 50, and was buried on 15 Nov 1938 in Fawkner Cemetery & Crematorium, Fawkner, Victoria, Australia. {FGID: 182968071}

Douglas & Ina were living at 172 Hayes Road, Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria when she died at only 50 years of age.

WELCOME HOME at UPPER PLENTY
From a Correspondent.

The Upper Plenty hall was crowded to overflowing on Wednesday evening when a public welcome home was tendered to Sergeant O. Easton, Signaller L. Easton, Trooper N. Christefferson, Privates H. and A. Sheirs and A. Patton.

Owing to one or two counter attractions in the Whittlesea district there were no visitors from that quarter. However, there was a
record attendance for Upper Plenty, there being visitors also from Wallan, Darraweit and Wandong.

The first part of the programme rook the form' of an entertainment,. a choice lot of songs and recitations being rendered by Miss Patullo, Rev. W. Fitzgerald, Messrs Webb,
Lawson, Grills, and Sergeant Easton.

The Chairman (Mr McDougall) said they had gathered together that evening to welcome home the last of the young men of
Upper Plenty who were returning after years of active service. All the other soldiers who had enlisted from the district had returned.

He (the chairman) then presented each soldier with a pair of handsome gold sleeve links inscribed with their respective initials, amidst applause.

Speeches congratulating the soldiers on their safe return, and wishing them every success in the future,: were delivered by Ore
Hadfield and Minchin,.and Messrs O'Hanlon, M Oummins and J. Grills. Mr O'Hanlon also congratulated Private Patton on making
a conquest in the matrimonial field, the latter having brought back an English bride.

Mr Grille, in referring to the Australian soldiers, said their deeds could best be summed up in the words some Californian
miners had inscribed on the tombstone of one of theiir mates : " He done his damndest angels could do no more." ('Loud laughter )

The Australian soldiers had done the same thing to keep' Australia free and to make the world safe for humanity.
Sergeant Easton suitably responded on behalf of his comrades and himself.

The audience then sang "For they are jolly good fellows" and gave three hearty cheers for the soldiers. Refreshments in
abundance were served, Mr Barnett,. Wallan being the caterer.

The hall. was then cleared and dancing became the order of the evening, for which Miss Patullo supplied splendid music gratis, and Mr M. Oummins was, as usual, a courteous and Etficient M,0.
