St Clair's states that the best theory of this William's parentage is that he was the 2nd son of Robert de Saint Clair (p. 279). The Scots Peerage also follows this, however under Niven Sinclair's genealogy he was the son of Henri de St. Clair and Margaret, daughter of the Earl of Mar. I have followed Niven's genealogical research on this matter.
