I’m Gary Patton — a bloke who’s spent a lot of years behind the wheel of road trains,
thinking about life, family, history and how it all fits together. These songs are
my way of putting those stories into music.

From big wheels on red dirt in the Pilbara to quiet nights in a little village in
Thailand, garypattonmusic is about real people, real places and moments
that come straight from the heart.

Stories behind the songs

Why I wrote “Not Just HeLa”

Henrietta Lacks never asked to be part of medical history, but her cells were taken,
named HeLa and used all over the world. I wrote Not Just HeLa to
remind people there was a real woman, a real family and a real story behind those
letters in a lab.

It’s my way of saying thank you, while also asking the question: how many times have
ordinary people quietly carried the weight of progress without anyone ever knowing
their name?

Red dirt roads & Thai sunsets

My life bounces between two very different worlds — the red dirt and road trains of
Western Australia, and the slower, family-centred life in a small village in Thailand.

Those long nights on the highway, the early mornings in the village, the people,
the history and the landscapes all end up in the songs. It’s a strange mix, but it’s
my reality — and that contrast is where a lot of the music lives.

About garypattonmusic

My name’s Gary Patton. I grew up in country Victoria, spent years
working all sorts of jobs and these days you’ll usually find me driving road trains
in Western Australia or spending time with family in Thailand.

I’ve always loved stories — family history, Australian history, the people who came
before us and the ones doing the hard yards today. Somewhere along the way, those
stories started turning into songs.

garypattonmusic is simply that: real stories from a real life. Some songs
look back, some are about where I am now, and some are just thoughts that wouldn’t
leave me alone until I wrote them down and put a tune to them.

If any of these songs connect with you, share them with someone who might need to
hear they’re not alone on their journey either.
