Clan History

St. Clare in Pont d'Eveque in Normandy is generally thought to be the birthplace of this great northern clan.

The family received a grant of the Barony of Roslin in Midlothian during the twelfth century. Through marriage, the family obtained the Earldom of Orkney, and in the next century received land in Caithness. The earldom or kingdom of Orkney was later resigned by order of James III.

The chief of clan Sinclair at this time split the family lands, giving the lands of Caithness to his elder son, and the lands at Roslin to his younger son. It was around this point that the spelling "Sinclair" came into general use, although the Earls of Roslin still prefer to use the older form of "St. Clare".

The Earls of Caithness engaged in a long succession of feuds with their neighbours and within the family. This resulted in the 4th Earl imprisoning his son in Girnigoe Castle, where he starved to death.

Much of the Sinclair lands in Caithness had to be sold off to pay debts. Within the family, rights to estates were disputed and culminated in a battle between the Sinclairs and the Campbells on the banks of Altimarlech, near Wick. It is said that, as a result of this battle, "so many Sinclairs were killed that the Campbells were able to cross the water without getting their feet wet".

St Clair's states very clearly that Marjory married John Dunbar, son of Sir Patrick Dunbar of Northfield, her cousin-german. This is the only Sir Patrick with a son John.

St Clair's states that this couple married, but had no children. This directly contradicts Burkes Peerage who state he died prior to Marjory's birth, and unmarried.

As they were first cousins there should be a papal dispensation or some form of allowance for this marriage to prove or disprove it.

Due to William being a minor at his father's death, his uncle, William of Freswick took over the estate. This was disputed by William's mother who wrote they were "...lodged in the garret, while Freswick occupied the other parts of the house of Rattar." (St Clair's, p. 231)

William lodged a claim to the dignity of Earl of Caithness which was sustained by the Committee of Privileges, however the preceding Earl had left his estates to the Sinclairs of Stevenson.

William and Patrick Calder of Lynegar were cousins-german.

He was involved in a court case about the Jacobite rebellion and found guilty of Treason - sentenced to death on 28 Jul 1746. Also tried with him were Earl of Kilmarnock and Lord Balmerina, both of whom were executed.

His sentence was commuted to imprisonment and his honours and estates were forfeited. He remained in prison until his death.

Technically he was not "Lord Duffus" as his claim to have his title restored was refused. In 1745 he left 'Skelbo' and moved to Ackergill, Caithness, so as not to be seen as continuing his father's loyaties to the Jacobites.

In 1760 he finally abandoned all rights to his title and estate to the Earl of Sutherland for 1000 pounds.

The author of the Mey Letters refer to this James Sinclair as the 3rd Baronet of Mey, however this certainly appears to be incorrect - he was at least the 5th Baronet. Nonetheless it was definitely this James' father who died in a debtors prison in Kirkwall in 1732.

According to St Clair's (p.243 and 244) this Alexander was the son of David Sinclair and Jean Sinclair, however, according to the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland, he was Alexander Sinclair of Brabsterdorran, who was the son of John Sinclair and Margaret, who assigned her wadset to her son Alexander in 1693. Alexander then sold his interest in Brabsterdorran.

Alexander was known to be the great grandson of Francis of Brabsterdorran, and since he was the last Sinclair of Brabsterdorran, they must be one and the same person, so his parentage is very much in question. Conclusion - there must have been two Alexander Sinclair's of Brabsterdorran at the same time. Considering each person only owned a portion of the estate this is feasible. However, this also means that John Sinclair and Margaret, with sons William and Alexander, who were granted a wadset to Brabsterdorran by Henry Dundas in 1670 are apparently unconnected to any of the other families of the area.

David Sinclair and Jean Sinclair being Alexander's parents makes more sense in terms of Alexander being Francis Sinclair's great grandson.

Scottish statesman, was the eldest son of Sir John Mackenzie, Bart., of Tarbat (d. 1654), and belonged to the same family as the earls of Seaforth. In 1654 he joined the rising in Scotland on behalf of Charles II. and after an exile of six years he returned to his own country and took some part in public affairs after the Restoration. In 1661 he became a lord of session as Lord Tarbat, but having been concerned in a vain attempt to overthrow Charles II.’s secretary, the earl of Lauderdale, he was dismissed from office in 1664. A period of retirement followed until 1678 when Mackenzie was appointed lord justice general of Scotland; in 1681 he became lord clerk register and a lord of session for the second time, and from 1682 to 1688 he was the chief minister of Charles II. and James II. in Scotland, being created viscount of Tarbat in 1685. In 1688, however, he deserted James and soon afterwards made his peace with William III., his experience being very serviceable to the new government in settling the affairs of Scotland. From 1692 to 1695 Tarbat was again lord clerk register, and having served for a short time as a secretary of state nuder Queen Anne he was created earl of Cromarty in 1703. He was again lord justice general from 1704 to 1710. He warmly supported the union between England and Scotland, writing some pamphlets in favour of this step, and he died on the 17th of August 1714. Cromarty was a man of much learning, and among his numerous writings may be mentioned his Account of the conspiracies by the earls of Gowry and R. Logan (Edinburgh, 1713).

The earl’s grandson George, 3rd earl of Cromarty (c. 1703— I 766), succeeded his father John, the 2nd earl, in February 1731. In 1745 he joined Charles Edward, the young pretender, and he served with the Jacobites until April 1746 when he was taken prisoner in Sutherlandshire. He was tried and sentenced to death, but he obtained a conditional pardon although his peerage was forfeited. He died on the 28th of September 1766.
This earl’s eldest son was John Mackenzie, Lord Macleod (1727—f 789), who shared his father’s fortunes in ‘745 and his fate in 1746. Having pleaded guilty at his trial Macleod was pardoned on condition that he gave up all his rights in the estates of the earldom, and he left England and entered the Swedish army. In this servicehe rose to high rank and was made Count Cromarty. The count returned to England in 1777 and was successful in raising, mainly among the Mackenzies, two splendid battalions of Highlanders, the first of which, now the Highland Light Infantry, served under him in India. In 1784 he regained the family estates and he died on the 2nd of April 1789. Macleod wrote an account of the Jacobite rising of 1745, and also one of a campaign in Bohemia in which he took part in 1757; both are printed in Sir W. Fraser’s Earls of Cromartie (Edinburgh, 1876).

Macleod left no children, and his heir was his cousin, Kenneth Mackenzie (d. 1796), a grandson of the 2nd earl, who also died childless. The estates then passed to Macleod’s sister, Isabel (1725—1801), wife of George Murray, 6th Lord Elibank. In 1861 Isabel’s descendant, Anne (f829—1288), wife of George, 3rd duke of Sutherland, was created countess of Cromartie with remainder to her second son Francis (1852—1893), who became earl of Cromartie in 1888. In 1895, two years after the death of Francis, his daughter Sibell Lilian (b. 1878) was granted by letters patent the title of countess of Cromartie.

At the time of their marriage Mary and Walter were only 9 years and 14 years old respectively.
Her mother arranged the marriage without proclamation, with a warrant from the presbytery of Kirkcaldy. It created a lot of disapproval and the court ruled that the couple should be separated until Mary was 12 years of age. During their separation they continued a very affectionate correspondence. However, she fell ill and died two years after their reunion, aged thirteen, in 1661 and her titles passed to her sister, Anne
