MAN KILLED IN CAR SMASH

Residents of Euroa, Violet Town and districts were shocked to hear at the weekend that well-known resident, Mr George Henry Harrison, had been fatally injured on Sunday Night.
The accident occurred on the Hume Highway near the Boho Rd., where the lat Mr Harrison's utility and another car collided. Deceased was 72 years of age.
Three men in the other care were injured. Driver of the car was Mr. N. May of Elwood, and the others injured were Mr Frank Manning, of St.Kilda, and Mr John P. Bruce, of Moorabbin. Another passenger in the car, Mr Angelo Angelidis, of Sandringham, escaped injury, Mr May and his companions were returning from motor races at Albury. They were towing a racing car behind their Valiant at the time of the accident.
The late Mr Harrison, whose wife predeceased him some years ago leaves one daughter Carol (Mrs C. Welsh) and four sons - Dick, Bert, George and Les - to whom deepest sympathy is extended. One son, James, predeceased him.
The funeral took place at Euroa Cemetery on Wednesday from the Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The mortuary details were in the hands of Mr R. L. Ferguson.

Though only sixteen years old, this young comrade has constantly proved the grace of God sufficient to keep him from all sin since the day he knelt at the pentinent-form, seeking mercy. He says - "I had not gone far into sin, but was going. I was a bad swearer, though mother knew it not. I formed the habit of smoking cigarettes and mixed with bad company. My life has been happy since I came to Jesus, and I am sorry that I did not come before." It may be said of him that he was saved in time. Brother Harrison delights in giving a bold and open testimony for Jesus, and knows the value of his new-found Friend. Though working in the bush all the week he keeps a bright countenance.
His is all there at the meetings, adn startles the imagination and feelings by his originality and sound exhortations to the sinner.
A future of great and blessed usefulness is predicted to him. He is the sort of boy who is able to mark out his path in life, fix his calling, and pursue it.

Gordon was known as Uncle Podge. He had one leg missing. He used to live in the old office of Farrell's Timber Mill (cnr Beaton Street & Euroa-Shepparton Road).

Stealing Wool

TWO YOUTHS CHARGED CASES ADJOURNED

Charged with having in their posession, two bags of wool suspected of having been stolen, Samuel Scott and Gordon Sheargold were charged befor the P.M, (Mr. H. R. McDonald) and Messrs J. T. Stuart and W.H. Dawson, at the Shepparton court on Tuesday last. Both pleaded guilty.
Sub-Inspector W. F. Tatchell con-ducted the prosecution. Mr. P. V. Feltham, appeared for the defendant Sheargold. Kenneth Coulstock, a storeman, employed by his father, a skin dealer, of Welsford Street, said he saw the two defendants at the store, They brought a bag of wool on April 30, which he bought.
On May 1 both defendants again came to the store with two bags of wool which they said was "dead wool." Sheargold asked him (witness) to buy the wool, but he said he was busy and told them to wait. In the meantime Const A. J. Ward arrived. The wool, he thought, was shorn off live sheep and valued at 32/. Plainclothes Const. A. J. Ward said about 12 noon on May 1 he went, in company with Const. Grant, to Coul-stock's store. He saw the two de-fendants and asked them where they got the wool. Scott said, "We got it at Murchison off dead sheep." Scott also said that he had the wool for about two weeks. By Mr. Feltham: The wool was in-side the doorway. This is the first time I have met the accused. Mounted Const. D. Grant corroborated Const Ward's evidence. Mr. Feltham said that defendant, Sheargold came from Euroa and had been a good lad prior to this charge. While away trapping he (Sheargold) had called at a farm and noticed wool in a shed, Sheargold and the other defendant both bagged the wool and brought it to Shepparton to dispose of it. It was his first offence and he asked that. Sheargold be released under a bond. Defendant Gordon Sheargold said he was 18 years of age. He was a laborer and lived at Euroa. He had been at Cobram trapping rabbits prior to getting the wool. When coming back from Cobram he called in at a shed for some matches. He there noticed wool on the floor, which he bagged and sold. He had never been in a court before. By Sub-Inspector Tatchell: I have known Scott for about 14 or IS yearn. Scott is a cousin of mine.
John Sheargold, father of the accused, said he was a rabbit agent and marine dealer living at Euroa. His son had never been involved in any court proceedings, and had always been a good son. He (witness) would enter into a bond on behalf of his son. By Inspector Tatchell: My son had never been away from home very much. Sub-Inspector Tatchell said that the other defendant, Samuel James Scott, was under a bond to be of good be-haviour for 12 months.
The P.M.; Why can't you refrain from taking other people's things ? You were let out on a bond and now you do this.
Scott failed to answer.
Mrs Scott said that her son had every chance possible. Her husband did not come to the court.
The P.M.: Defendant Scott, you Witness (crying): Yes.
The p.M.: Defendant Scott, you have had a chance, yet you persist in breaking the laws. The Bench has decided to adjourn the case until July 1, but if there is any trouble you will be called upon to surrender to your former bond.
Both cases were adjourned.

Murder Victims
Sensational revelations of big-time racketeering are expected from investigations into the murder or William (Big Bill) Sheargold and Ernest Frederick (Ikey) Dew (left). The bodies of both men were dragged from the Barwon River last Sunday, and it is believed their association with the sly-grog racket led to their deaths.
Sensational, also, is the almost positive conclusion based on dis- < closures to Truth's Melbourne office that the deaths of the two men were the result of mercy killings. Inquiries suggest that they were injured in a gun-knife-fist fight with black market racketeers, that attempts were made to heal their wounds and that they finally were shot to 'be put out of their misery.' That theory is supported by the fact that Sheargold's left knee was bandaged when his body was recovered, though he was not wear-ing the bandage when, with Dew, he disappeared on June 21. Evidence gathered by detectives suggests that Sheargold and Dew, both Geelong notorieties, were kept under armed guard for at least a week and 'exterminated' when they failed to respond to rough and ready treatment.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: The Evening Advocate, Innisfail QLD - Gunshot Clue In Double Murder, 18 Jul 1946, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. MELBOURNE.\emdash Geelong detectives investigating the mur der of William Sheargold, 28, and Ernest Frederick Dew, 31, whose bodies were recovered from the Barwon river on Sunday have been informed by a man that he recently heard six shots near the river, about a mile from where the bodies were found. Other reports allege that shots were heard in different suburbs of Geelong on and after June 21 when the men disappeared. Police today began a search for Mrs. Audrey Sheargold, wife of William Sheargold, although she is in no way under suspicion in regard to the crime. Mrs. Sheargold, it is revealed, left her husband last March, takng her daughter aged nine with her.

GEELONG. \emdash Charges of having murdered William Stewart Sheargold, 28, and Ernest Fredwick Dew, 30. both of Wheeler Place, Geelong, preferred against Edward George Carr, 36, of Fernleigh Street, Chllweli, and Horatio Raymond Morris, 28, of Orr Street, Carlton, were- withdrawn in the Geelong City. Court on Friday.
Detective Sub-Inspector J. T. McKeogh said the police desired leave to withdraw the proceedings. Mr A. E. McDonald, who appeared for Carr and Morris, offered no objection. Mr Steedman, PM, had retired before the charges were called, and Messrs E. J. Haynes, A. J. Spalding and A. M. Collins, J'sP, were on the Bench. Just previously, when Mr Steed-man was presiding, Horatio Raymond Morris was charged with having, on June 21 at „Chilwell, wounded William Stewart Sheargold with intent to commit murder. Detective Sub-Inspector Mc-
Keogh asked for a remand for a 9 week. The remand was granted. 1 Edward George Carr was charged with having, at Chilwell, on May 12, wounded James George Mc-Kenna with intent to commit murder. A remand to next Friday was granted. Bail was allowed in a surety of £250 and a bond of £250 for each. Carr was later re-arrested and charged with having, at Ballarat, on December 29, 1945, stolen a motor car, the property of James H. Slyth.
