Born Behind A Flour Mill: 1861, Euroa, Victoria, Australia
George was born in a tent on the banks of the Seven Creeks, behind what was known as the "Old Flour Mill", which in those days was known as Urowa Station (later Kirkland Station). In the Journal '100 Years Of Local Government 1880-1980, A General History of Euroa and District,' page 61 about deaths of old residents, it states; Mr. George Harrison, who was reported to be the first white child born in Euroa...........".
Georges' mother Isabella would have taught him to read and write because of her teaching experience.
He grew up and lived at "Fermoy" (Euroa Inn) which is still on the Old
Hume Highway at Euroa. This was a Hotel and Boarding house. George's father moved to Albury, NSW and Isabella lived with Maurice GARRETT who was the builder and owner of "Fermoy" (Euroa Inn).
George selected land at the bottom of the Balmattum Hill.
As a very young boy he noticed the wild horses used to graze on this land, so he knew it was good pasture. He was a farmer and also a shearer as times were tough during the depression, sometimes he had to go away shearing even to NSW. In his younger days he was interested in trotting and owned some good performers which he rode at local and district shows.
He was a member of the first cricket team in Euroa, and led the Euroa team to victory in the first match played at Shepparton. On that occasion the creek and river were flooded and transport was very different from today, and the Euroa Captain would not take the trip,
after going a few miles George HARRISON, as Vice-Captain, carried on and his team won the match.
Later, though crippled at the time, he was pleased to be offorded the opportunity of placing a brick when they laid the foundation stone for the new Hall at Euroa. He was a man of hospitable nature and the young folk of the older days enjoyed many happy gatherings at his home. Having seen Euroa grow from it's infancy he could talk with great interest of the early days.
George & Annie farmed their land with cattle, pigs, chooks, fruit, vegetables and also horses. George built a large room on the side of his home which was used for many of his children to sleep in as well as entertaining with dances and parties.
A couple of months after the death of his father in Albury, George bought more property nearby his home.
EARLY HISTORY OF EUROA By C. L. DeBoos: 2 Oct 1908, Euroa, Victoria, Australia
Taken from an article in the Euroa Advertiser, Friday 2nd October, 1908.
EARLY HISTORY OF EUROA
By C. L. DeBoos.
The name 'Euroa' originated from the aboriginal name, viz, 'Yera-O,' meaning joyful.
The township was surveyed by Mr. Thos. Wedge, in the year 1849, the area being about one-half of what it is at present.
The run, or station was first taken up by a Mr. Mackey, and a few years afterwards became the property of a syndicate, "Holland and Barnes," merchants Melbourne with whom was associated Mr. Templeton. It susequently passed into the hands of Mr. Kirkland. On the first map the creek is named Templeton's.
When I first came to Euroa in 1853, the homestead stood in Kirkland-street, nearly opposite the Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Wm. Forlonge bought the station in 1851, and came to live there, and soon after bought the Seven Creeks station from Messrs. Holland and Barnes, and built a wattle-and-dab house which still forms part of the house there, the builder being the late Mr. Wm Beaton. Mr Forlonge left Euroa to reside there.
The first sale of township allotments was held in Melbourne, which was then the Port Phillip district of New South Wales.
Among the first purchasers of allotments were Chas. Green, W. Douglas, N. Cluskey, J. Morgan, J. Watkins, J. Bushby, J. Gemmell, Jas. Millerd, J. Mason, W. Austin, F. Ratchford, I. Harrison and W. Beaton.
Chas. Green was the first to build-a slab hut, on the site where Mr. J. Saxon now lives. Douglas Cluskey, and Morgan were the next to build, these being the only buildings I can remember when I, with my parents, came in February 1853.
This was the time of the rush to the Ovens diggings, which was the means of bringing a number of new residents to the township, and the starting of business.
Douglas being the first to open a small store, and E. Williams and W. Hill a butcher's shop, my father being next, opening a store in a large tent-on the Seven Creeks hotel corner, the family living in tents, where he carried on business for many months, afterwards building a string-bark store and dwelling.
Mr. Vidler was living in a tent on our land, thinking it was his allotment, preparing to build an hotel, which he erected on the next allotment. The hotel building was soon completed and opened in 1853, the price of nobblers being 6d, and brandy 10s per bottle. Brandy, rum and gin were the drinks most used in those days, whisky not coming into use for many years. In wines, sherry was the most used, the only beer obtainable being British bottled, 2s 6d per bottle.
The first blacksmith was a Mr Deedy (employed by Mr. Vidler) in a back building, opposite where Mr. McGuinness's shop stood, Mr. Lot Parsons working with him as a wheelwright. David Black became owner of the business a a new shop was built for him by Mr. Garrett on the opposite side of the street. And after the death of Black, Mr Hogg got the business, and brought Mr. McGuinness as blacksmith, and soon after Mr. Kearney as wheelwright. The business afterwards becoming Mr. McGuinness's, was carried on by him till the year 1876.
Williams and Hill dissolved partnership. Williams opened a store and butcher's business near Challenger's, and a few years after built an hotel, now Challenger's boarding house. After a few years he failed and died and the property was bought by Mr. Challenger.
Mr. Beaton built the Pilgrim Inn in the early sixties, and did a good business for a number of years. A little later my father build and opened the Seven Creeks hotel and carried on the business until he sold out to Mr (illegible).
Mr Hogg built a brick store just beyond Mr. McGuinness's shop, but only occupied for a short period, when he sold the business to Mr. Alex. Wakenshaw, Mr. Muirhead succeeding him, and afterwards Mr W. Hogg and Mrs. Cree.
Mr. J. Hogg owned the land which is now Mr. Gordon McKernan's, and build a good w.b. house there, and made a fruit garden, and the family lived there for many years, he and his sons being carriers from Melbourne to Beechworth up to about the time of his death. Jas. Hogg came from N.S.W. to Faithful's Creek in the year 1848. A small hotel being kept there by a Mr. Watson, nicknamed "Donkey Watson."
Hogg bought the business and carried it on for a few years, until the death of his wife, which occurred soom after Aleck was born. He was suckled by a goat and reared on goat's milk. Mrs. Hogg is buried on the opposite side of the creek from when the hotel stood. The grave was re-fenced with an iron fence about 2 years ago by her son, the late Wm. Hogg.
The first school was opened by father in a small bark hut at the rear of his store in 1854. Shortly after Mr. Vidler employed a schoolmaster (Mr. Kenny), and school was conducted in a small rooom, Mr. Kenny's successor being Mr. Owen Flannery. I find from an old record of my father's that Mr. Vidler received 10s per week for rent for the schoolroom in early part of the year 1858.
A commencement was made to establish a denominational school in 1857, and a brick room was commenced March 1858.
This room is now the kitchen portion of the Church of England vicarage. The bricks (30,000) cost £53, foundation £16 10s, bricklayer (a man named William Parsons) £55, roof £75 2s. No floor, but after a time a brick floor was put down. Mr. T.S Dickson was the first teacher, he receiving Government aid towards his salary.
(Next week's will be about churches, some old identities and the early squatters, Faithful's Creek, Strathbogie, Honeysuckle, Moglonemby, Molka, Killeen, etc., and the aboriginals.)
