William was killed by a Steam Engine at the Sandhurst railway station, the following is the account from a newspaper article (origin unknown) of his death....
KILLED BY A RAILWAY ENGINE
The adjourned inquest on the body of William Sheargold, who was killed by a passing engine at the Sandhurst railway station on the 16th ins. was continued on Saturday by Mr. K. V. Damme, J.P.
John Gray, engine-driver, deposed that he was taking an engine down No. 2 road to put it in front of the Echuca train about 11.35. a.m. Between the road the engine was on and the road on which the train was on, there was a distance of 6 feet. Witness saw deceased close to the rails on which the engine was going from 4 to 6 miles an hour. Witness sounded the whistle, and shut off the steam, and the engine stopped immediately after passing deceased. When the whistle was sounded, deceased was 10 yards from the engine, and he had ample time to get clear of the engine after the whistle. After the whistle sounded, deceased stepped on to the road the engine was on and there was no time to pull the engine up. It was purely an accident caused by deceased stepping in front of the engine. When witness first saw deceased he was clear of the engine road. The six foot spaces were perfectly well known to the men. Deceased was struck by the engine. Witness found deceased lying on the road between the rails about 10 yards from where the witness first saw him. Deceased could have seen the engine coming. When witness first saw deceased he was 20 yards from the engine, walking hi the same direction as the engine was going and was clear of the engine. When seen on the engine road, he was ten yards away.
Ellen Fahey, sister of deceased, deposed that he was not absent-minded nor deaf, and was an active man.
Edmund Lockhart, fireman, corroborated Gray's evidence. Gray was sober and attentive to his duties. He did not think there was time to pull up the engine. Everthing necessary to pull up had been done. There was 120 pounds of steam on, and witness would not swear the engine was not going eight miles an hour. Had it been travelling fur miles an hour, the engine could have been stopped had they thought there was a danger.
Ellen Fahey deposed that deceased was single, 35 years of age, and the sole support of herself and family. He was a labourer on the railway.
Thomas Whitehead deposed that deceased had often been between the lines before at the same place, and was aware that trams passed and re-passed.
Arthur Llewellyn Morris, shunter, deposed that he was driving the Echuca train on to the platform. Deceased at the time was walking in the six feet space between the lines. Witness saw him step in front of the engine driven by Gray, the whistle sounded and the engine stopped. Deceased was picked up after the engine had passed over him.
Thomas Whitehead deposed that deceased's duty was to tack on way bills on trucks, and he was employed that way at the time of the accident. Deceased was perfectly sober. There is always danger at the place.
Dr Colquhoun deposed that deceased was brought to the hospital about midday. All the external injuries were a small wound on the back of the right arm and some abrasions on the scalp. The spine was fractured in the neck, and that was the cause of death.
A verdict of accidental death was recorded.

Ellen married Daniel FAHEY,31 son of Daniel FAHEY 31 and Ann GLEESON,31 on 31 Dec 1869 in Quarry Hill, Sandhurst, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Daniel was born in 1843 in Co Clare Ireland and died on 5 Jul 1881 in Sheepshead Gully, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, at age 38.

Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW) - July 7 1881
Yesterday, at Sandhurst, a fatal accident occurred in the mine of the Great Southern Company.
Two miners, named Daniel Fahey and John Myers were killed instantly. They were working at the 320 feet level when a sudden fall of quartz crushed them both.
Two other miners working in the same shaft has a narrow escape. More than an hour was required to clear the drive to reach the bodies, which were found greatly mutilated.
Events
Daniel immigrated onboard the Sir Robert Sale on 30 May 1850 to Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia. Age 6, the family had departed from Plymouth.
.
The following was reported in the Bendigo Advertiser, Wednesday 6th July 1881
SHOCKING FATAL MINING ACCIDENT
The mine of the Great Southern Company, on the Garden Gully line of reef, was the scene of another shocking accident yesterday, which resulted in the death of two men named Daniel Fahey and John Myers.
Both men were engaged working at the 320 feet level, in the stopes or backs between No.2 adn No.3 shafts. A quantity of loose quartz had been broken down in the morning, and after the ground had been properly sounded, Fahey and Myers commenced wheeling the quartz to the shoots, for the purpose of being discharged into the level.
Fahey's brother was at work a short distance away and a man named William Griss was also in close proximity. A shot had been put in by one of the men, and at about one o'clock, as preparations were being made to fire it, a large body of quartz fell from the face, and completely covered the two unfortunate men, who were standing underneath.
Griss barely escaped with his life, but Fahey's brother remained unhurt. The alarm having been given, relays of men were quickly at work endeavoring to extricate the bodies. After the lapse of about three-quarters of an hour Myers' body was recovered, but life was extinct. The face was very badly cut; in fact, the lower portion fo the jaw was broken away. Fahey's body was recovered shortly afterwards. In both cases death appeared to have been instantaneous.
The quantity of ground that fell away amounted to about five or six loads.
From present appearances the unfortunate occurrence seems to have been purely accidental.
The ground when sounded in the morning appeared to be perfectly safe. The stopes were timbered to within eight feet of the face. The face consisted of a greacy piece of quartz of between forty and fifty tons in extent.
Although securely timbered it appears to have been settling down gradually and noiselessly until one end split, and caused the quantity of earth stated to fall away. Had the whole given away, probably not one of the men working in the stopes would have escaped. Patrick Fahey heard the ground giving way, but his warning to his brother to avoid the impending danger came too late.
The accident, which is one of the most shocking of its kind that ever happened in the district, is attended with some very sad features. Fahey was about 35 years of age, and leaves a wife and family of five children; and Myers, who was quite a young man, was the only support of a widowed mother.
Senior-constable Gleeson, who was sent to take charge of the bodies, had much difficulty in getting them removed to the Queen's Arm's Hotel, Quarry Hill, where they now lie, in consequence of the opposition offered by the relatives.
Dr. H. Boyd was sent for immediately on the accident being made known, but his services of course were not of the slightest avail under the circumstances.
The mining inspector (Mr. Grainger) also visited the mine shortly after the accident, and made an inspection.
An inquest will be held on the bodies this morning at 11 o'clock, at the Queen's Arm's by Mr. Strickland.
