... Leaving Wandong about 9 O'clock comfortably seated in the passenger car drawn by three staunch horses, the party journeyed pleasantly along an upgrade 4+ miles until the famous 'Bump' was reached.
Here the horses were dispensed with and the car coupled onto a steel cable where there is a steep drop of some hundreds of feet mainly over trellised bridgework, which makes one shudder to look down and contemplate the awful possibility of the breakage of the cable, any slight accident, the inevitable ending of which would be fearful death to all concerned....and many a fervent prayer was silently uttered during the perilous descent.

Leaving the cable, the party had another exciting ride.

.....Again the services of horseflesh are dispensed with and the party is left to the mercy of the driver, Mr William Patton, who takes charge of them and with a handbrake guides his load of living freight over declivities and around abnormally sharp curves at a pace that strikes terror into the hearts of the stoutest comissioners. The horses are picked up once more and a steady rise of about 1000 feet is made until the Comet Mills are reached.

Wandong Athletic Club.
From a Correspondent.

The annual sports of the above club were held on New Year's Day and passed off in good style. The day was perfect for the outing and the attendance large.

The programme was too lengthy to be completed in the limited time, and the concert at night was also cancelled, but the dance was well attended and continued until daylight the next morning.
There was a publican's booth on the sports ground, also fruit and refreshment stalls, and all appeared to do good business.
The various contests were interesting, the dancing particularly so.

The Sheffield handicap was won by Holmes of Wallan, with Faulks (Wandong) and Ross (Broadford) third. Ryan (Broadford) was successful in the 75 yards sprint, Faulks and Holmes filling the minor places.

The wood chopping contests brought together some expert cutters and much interest was taken by the spectators. The standing block 40-inch chop was won by W.Jenkins, Clonbinane. H.McDonel (Broadford) being second and Hill (Broadford) third. In the 45-inch underhand chop Wentworth finished first, Shider being a close second and McDonel third. Jenkins also won the chop for local competitors, with E.Russell second.

The step dancing took place on a specially erected platform, the music being supplied by a Scotsman in full uniform with bagpipes, and five little girls, ranging from four years to 12 years, in full Scottish costume, did the dancing, which included the Reel 'o' Tullock and Highland Fling. Joyce Davidson being placed first and Zema Gallaher second. The Sailor's hornpipe, Irish reel and Irish jig were splendidly danced by half a dozen little girls J.Davidson (4 years old), Tassy Doyle, E.Kruse, G.Davidson, C.Doyle and E.Kerise. The children also dance the Highland fling. Stepping a chain was won by E.D.Balmer, Reedy Creek.

The horse event brought out eight jumpers, and after keen competition Mat Quillinan (Bylands) won with Highland Laddie. The hunters were J.Dew's Creamy, T.Quinn's Mountain Belle, G.Cahill's Larry, A.Saunders Derby, N.Budd's Jackaroo, - Smith's Irish Mollie and - Murphy's Jack Adallo. Derby fell over the second fence, but no damage was done.

The judges in the hunters' event were Messrs John Neill (Broadford), W.Patton, sen., and K.McDonel (Wandong).

Charles married Caroline Mary Alice SCOTT,61 daughter of Arthur Edward SCOTT 2 and Marian Wilcox WETHERDON,2 in 1880 in Whittlesea, Victoria 3757.51 Caroline was born in 1858 in Stanley, Victoria61 and died on 27 May 1944 in Wallan East, Victoria 375621 at age 86.

Caroline Alice Mary Scott who married Charles Douglas Patton (1859 - 1922) was the Great-Grand-daughter of Captain John Scott who sailed with Horatio Nelson.

The following excerpt is from an article in the Weekly Times, Wednesday 3rd February 1954 (page 48) - Interview with Marian Elizabeth "May" Patton (Caroline's daughter). For the full article go to May's information.

One of Miss Patton's most prized possessions is a framed testimonial letter written by Lord Nelson to her great-great grand father, Captain John Scott Captain Scott was both private secretary and chaplain to Lord Nelson. The letter was written on board the Victory and dated August 17, 1805, just a short time before the flagship set sail to do battle with the French Navy. "It is said," Miss Patton tells you, "that Nelson actually fell in Scott's blood. During the Battle of Trafalgar when my great -
great - grandfather was shot, Nelson asked 'Is that poor Scott?' A short time later Nelson fell at the same spot."
Tracing back her family history is, for Miss Patton an interesting pastime.
Famous writer, Sir Walter Scott, is on her family tree, "and that's probably where I inherited my flair. 'she says with a twinkle in her eyes.

Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson

Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté KB (29 September 1758 - 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. He was noted for his inspirational leadership, superb grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics, which together resulted in a number of decisive naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was wounded several times in combat, losing the sight in one eye in Corsica and most of one arm in the unsuccessful attempt to conquer Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He was shot and killed during his final victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The Death of Captain John Scott

Battle is joined

Victory came under fire, initially passing wide, but then with greater accuracy as the distances decreased. A cannonball struck and killed Nelson's secretary, John Scott, nearly cutting him in two. Hardy's clerk took over, but he too was almost immediately killed. Victory's wheel was shot away, and another cannonball cut down eight marines. Hardy, standing next to Nelson on the quarterdeck, had his shoe buckle dented by a splinter. Nelson observed, "This is too warm work to last long." The Victory had by now reached the enemy line, and Hardy asked Nelson which ship to engage first. Nelson told him to take his pick, and Hardy moved Victory across the stern of the 80-gun French flagship Bucentaure. Victory then came under fire from the 74-gun Redoutable, lying off the Bucentaure's stern, and the 130-gun Santísima Trinidad. As sharpshooters from the enemy ships fired onto Victory's deck from their rigging, Nelson and Hardy continued to walk about, directing and giving orders.

James Sullivan Collins, who married Bessie Patton came from Western Australia to GIppsland in March 1910 to open up the Goodwood Timber and Tramway Company's sawmill in the Mullungdung Forest. This is just near my parents own dairy farm in the town of Woodside. In fact, Goodwood is still marked by signage in the Forest and you can see some remnants (posts etc.) in the area. There was a small book put together by the granddaughter of Elizabeth Collins (Green) about Goodwood. James Snr was the Mill Manager. It states - "James Collins surveyed the tramline that was to be laid to Port Albert from the mill, a distance of some twenty miles. He was married and had three sons and a daughter. His daughter, Elizabeth, married an employee of the mill, Arnold Green and they had three sons. Unfortunately, she died of tuberculosis when she was only about thirty-one years of age. James's sons, James (junior) and WIlliam, worked at the mill and Geoffrey, the youngest went to school there. James managed the Mill for ten years and took keen interest in sport, especially that of the local football team. After the mill closed down he went to Neerim where the Goodwood Company commenced operations on a much larger scale. After several years as manager he returned to help operate his sons' sawmill near the old Goodwood forest area. He did on July 22, 1938 aged 76 years. He was buried in Yarram cemetery."
